Good morning from a frosty morning in South Carolina! Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning the song goes. S-h-h-h-, don't tell anyone, but there just might be a bit of competition on that claim! Texas would be a front runner in the race! I guess I'll never quite get it out of my system ... Texas 42 either, for that matter. For those who are saying what is that? It's just a domino game - it's legal and fun!
Speaking of races, we've a long way to go, baby, till the presidential election! One wonders how some networks can keep the commentary going on the candidates 24/7, but several of them manage to do so! (I'm guilty of making sure they do this!) I hope you are all considering your favorite candidate very carefully. Aren't we blessed to live in America where we can exercise this fantastic freedom - which, by the way, isn't really free, as we all know. For those of us in SC the choice will be over tomorrow evening. Tomorrow is the Democratic Primary - the Republican Primary was several days ago. You'll notice the link on the website and have a HUGE clue who MY candidate is! Soon, the field will be narrowed and then the fun begins!
Late next week we will be on the road again, to coin Willie's song. Our plans are to travel to Nashville, TN where we will spend a few days with long-time friends, Dora and Derry Magee, who have a timeshare there. One of the highlights of the trip will be meeting their new great-granddaughter, Mia Mackenzie Johnson, daughter of Bill and Kellie Johnson. We also hope to spend a little time catching up with Landrum and Nell Salley. Landrum was our pastor at FBC Kentwood, LA many years ago. They retired to Nashville a few years ago.
Leaving Nashville we will head to East Texas to spend time with my sister, Bea, who will turn 80 on February 10! Wow, this is a real milestone for my side of the family. We plan to "party hearty" at Golden Corral in Henderson, TX on Saturday February 9, where we hope to have quite a round-up of local family and friends to celebrate Bea's big day!
From there we will head to Kentwood, LA to spend a couple of days with Gail Smith, Bill's sister. Spending time in Kentwood is always fun ... so many friends to see and catch up with. (Not to mention that we always seem to gravitate to one of the area catfish restaurants! Man, can they fry up some delicious catfish down there!) Kentwood is no longer a thriving, bustling, dairy center of the South as it was many years ago, but it still abounds with wonderful, warm and gracious folks and we are proud to continue to be joined at the hip with Kentwood - Bill's hometown, where Art and Andy grew up, and where part of our hearts still remain.
While we are on the road, I will probably not be adding much to the website. Actually, I'm still a little unsure about what will be interesting for folks. So, if you happen to log on sometimes, send me your ideas and thoughts, okay? Criticisms are welcomed, too!
Oh, one more thing: I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the photos from the Bible Study gals who are meeting here on Wednesdays for our current study We have a terrific group of women who love each other and love studying the Bible - oh, and coffee, too! Wish me luck as I try to incorporate some of these photos into this entry. (I cannot figure out how to make them larger! This program may not let me do that. Oh, well, it's nice to be small in some way!
)

Included (some more than once) are: Kathy Klump, Benita Miller, Rebecca Cauthen, Barbara Skipper, Hope Davis, Jimmie Harms, Joyce Faulkenberry, Velta, Jean White, Lenda Wilson, Betty Kimbrell. Not pictured is Doris McKinney - I apologize, Doris! My photography skills are lacking and Doris' image was cut off!)

Velta, you done good, honey! Those pictures just fit right in that very space you had for them. I think you've been practicing.
I'm enjoying all of your 'ramblings' as you call them. Keep it up. I look forward to them. (I do think you need to finish your book, you have a way with words.) Gotta go! Love you. Benita

Girlfriend, you are good medicine for the soul! Chicken Soup definitely isn't the only prescription for making people feel better! Of course, you probably wrote THAT book yourself!
Thanks, friend, and you and Don have a wonderful weekend and try to stay out of trouble!
Love you ...

Hello Velta,
I found your Blog when I was googleing my dughters name. It is VELTA, too. She is named after her grandma on my husband's side. I was wondering how you got your name. I do enjoy your writing. I like that you have a great sense of family and home. Have a wonderful trip.

Hi Kim!
How thoughtful of you to write! You would never believe that just today I was thinking how neat it would be if another Velta happened to pop up because of my blog! Every two or three years I would Google my own name, but I have seldom been privileged to actually correspond with another Velta. Thank you for making this day complete!
My mother (Odelle McFadden Gray) told me that my grandmother, Mary Harriett (Watson) McFadden - her mother - named me after a character in a book that she was reading. It is a very unusual name and I have only known of 3 others in my lifetime. I was born in Rusk Co., TX. I knew of one Velta in Dallas when we lived there many years ago, one in Lafayette, LA (who I actually met), and one that I found on the Internet some time ago. She lived in Arkansas, and at the time was attending part-time classes at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, AR, where both our sons granduated in the early '80s. I would be thrilled to hear more about your Velta when you have time to write again. I don't know about your Velta, but I have gotten called lots of strange names! I often joke that I have been called Velda, Nelda, Veeta, Vesta, Belda, Velvet - you name it! But I don't mind, because it is an unsual name. My middle name is Rebecca.
One of my very favorite things is to make new friends! I live in Lancaster, SC, but for many years lived in a small town in Louisiana (Kentwood), and am a native Texan! My life is full of much love, and I am richly blessed in too many ways too count.
Thank you again! I am still getting used to having this website and am not quite sure what to do with it! Hearing from a new friend has just confirmed that it is going to fun! I must thank my son for believing this was something I would enjoy.
Have a wonderful evening,
Velta Morris

Glad to read that you will be "passing thru" Louisiana. does that mean you will be seeing your favorites in the Baton Rouge Area. (that would include Ron and me.) You surely don't want me being poochy mouth, so do plan a visit!!!!!

Oh, I just may have to leave Bill in Louisiana and take up temporary residence in Baton Rouge! I was just e-mailing Pat earier that our schedule is REAL tight this trip because Bill has this ham radio responsibility on Fridays and he doesn't want to miss but one Friday this trip so we will be traveling back to SC on Wednesday, February 13.... so, it's not looking too good at the moment to have a night in Baton Rouge. So I will be the one with the poochy mouth!
I surely do hate to pass up a trip to hug my boyfriend down there (Don't tell Ron - I know it would just break his heart in two!). Seriously, we are planning another trip before too long and we will be sure to grab some hugs and good times from all you guys! If things change and we can sneak away from TX a day early we'll check in with the powers-that-be (that would be Ms. Humphries!) and see if we can arrange a bit of Cajun cuisine somewhere in the area.
We love you bunches!!!
